11-19-2013 Organization of the Board with Oath and Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #39

Title
National Organization of Victims Assistance (NOVA) Training

Discussion

Consultant, Cheryl Ricciardi, from the Florida Crisis Response Team, will conduct a forty (40) hour National Organization of Victims Assistance (NOVA) course training to cover techniques and protocols for providing crisis intervention to traumatized individuals and groups within our school district.

The  training includes homework to be completed on the participants' own time.  Included in the cost are:  a workbook for each participant and a complimentary NOVA Crisis Response Refresher Training follow-up course for two years.  Participants will be credentialed through the Florida Crisis Response Team.  The benefits for the district to obtain credentialed professionals are important for the following reasons:

  • Provides a common foundation and language for all responders
  • Provides consistent procedures
  • Promotes best practices in this area of psychological first aid
  • Enhances recognition and credibility in our crisis response in schools
  • Facilitates continuing skill-building development and education
  • Reinforces a network of crisis responders which can provide mutual aid

Thirty-five (35) staff (Psychologists, Behavioral Analysts, Social Workers and other District personnel) will be trained at a cost of $89 per day, per participant, for a total of $400 per participant.

Recommendation

Approve the consultant agreement between Brevard Public Schools and Cheryl Ricardi, Certified NOVA Trainer, for a four and one-half day training which will occur December 9, 10, 18, 19, 20, 2013.
