School Improvement Plans (SIP)

Discussion

The School Improvement Plans (SIPs) are being submitted for approval from 88 schools including the alternative schools sites.  Each public school in Florida is required to complete and submit a School Improvement Plan annually under Florida Statute [1001.42(18) (a)].

A school Differentiated Accountability status is determined by school grade.  A, B, and C schools' SIPS are not monitored by the state, but all D and F schools are required to complete the state template.  For the 2013-2014 school year, Brevard has three (3) schools required to use the DOE School Improvement template.  All other Brevard schools completed the district template.

The process for completing SIPS includes conducting needs assessments based on data available from the previous three years.  This year, in order to better align SIPS with the new evaluation process, each School Improvement Plan continues to include "Data Analysis from Multiple Sources," "Analysis of Current Practice," and "Best Practice."  Schools must use research and data to determine the focus of the SIP.  Each school identifies a School Based Objective with a laser focus on research-based instructional practice(s) that will be most effective to improve student achievement.  The template includes an Evaluation-Outcome Measures and Reflection section to more closely tie the SIP to the instructional Performance Appraisal System.  The "Qualitative and Quantitative Professional Practice Outcomes" should clearly outline what schools will use to measure the implementation of professional practice of teachers and staff.  The "Qualitative and Quantitative Student Achievement Expectations" should clearly define what will be used to measure student achievement.  Each school will complete a data analysis document to analyze trend data in order to be certain data is used to drive instruction.

Schools on the attached list are being submitted for approval.

The plans will serve as the primary communication tool with parents, faculty, and community regarding the school academic focus for the 2013-2014 school year.  The document will also be reviewed and approved by each School Advisory Council.

Florida Statue 1001.42 (18) (a) states that the school board will annually approve new, amended, or continued School Improvement Plans.  Each school may receive additional funding based on the current FTE enrollment.  The funds are to be used in the implementation of the identified strategies for the School Improvement Plan.  To date, these funds have not been allocated by the DOE for the 2013-2014 school year.

A copy of the School Improvement Plan for each school and alternative school sites is available in the Office of School Improvement, in the Office of Testing and Accountability, and Evaluation.  SIPS are also available on-line on each school's website and on the District website at:
