11-19-2019 Board Work Session (JUUL Litigation)

The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met for a Board Workshop on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida to learn more about the feasibility and merit of joining the JUUL litigation. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Eagle newspaper on Thursday, November 7, 2019. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

A representative from the Charpentier Law Firm provided the Board a presentation which included data about dangers of vapor cigarettes and the youth vaping epidemic.  The law firm wanted to find out the Board's interest in joining the litigation against the JUUL company and described what would be entailed.

Board members had questions regarding the impact to staff time.

Ms. Belford, Ms. McDougall, Mr. Susin and Ms. Campbell were in support of exploring the possibility of moving forward as a district.  Ms. Descovich stated, that while she feels vaping is an epidemic in our schools, she did not feel it was the role of the Board to enter into the litigation.

Board consensus was to have General Counsel Envall look into an agreement that would ensure minimizing impact to staff time.
