Agenda Item #15
Inclusive Schools Week Proclamation
National Inclusive Schools Week is December 5-9, 2016. The purpose of this Proclamation is to raise and celebrate the progress schools have made in implementing inclusive practices to ensure a quality education for an increasingly diverse student population. The Week provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children. It is an occasion to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of teachers, administrators, students, and parents in making their schools more inclusive, and, thereby, significantly contributing to the development of a more inclusive society.
Celebrating is important because it creates an awareness of the benefits and challenges inclusive schools face. It provides us a pause in our busy lives to reflect on where we are and where we are going. Celebration, reflection, planning, and action are the elements necessary to understand the potential of inclusive education and realize its promise.
Towards this effort, principals have been provided a cover letter and sample daily messages that may be read during daily announcements, and an invitation to contact our local facilitator with the Florida Inclusion Network, Mr. Bill Pearlman, for additional information and resources. Press releases will be provided to the Coordinator of Media Content at Brevard Public Schools and our local newspaper, Florida Today, and a banner will appear in the rotation on the district website.
