Agenda Item #29
Request a More Restrictive Dress Code at Merritt Island High
Board Policy 5511 - Dress and Grooming currently allows students to wear tops with a one and one half 1 1/2 inches in width. The school convened a dress code committee and is recommending upper garments have sleeves for both male and female students to be effective second semester of the 2010/11 school year. A consistent dress and grooming policy is necessary in order to maintain order, provide a safe school environment, and promote discipline. For example, girls wear racerback tank tops which fall under the 1 1/2 inch width, but still expose the back. Depending on the sleeveless garment and the type of bra, the bra straps may be exposed. It is difficult to be consistent with dress code violations when the requirements are vague.
Approve a more restrictive dress code at Merritt Island High.
