Agenda Item #49
Field Trip - Merritt Island High School Student Government Association to Washington, D.C., February 16 - February 19, 2017
The Merritt Island High School Student Government Association (SGA) plans to travel to Washington, D.C. on Thursday, February 16 through Sunday, February 19, 2017. This opportunity will enrich the students' understanding of how our nation's government functions. Students will also be given the opportunity to experience the rich history and development of our nation's capital, while learning leadership strategies that will benefit their student body.
Approximately 25 students will participate and be chaperoned by three (3) district employees, as well as three (3) A+ chaperones. Students and chaperones will travel by plane from Orlando International Airport to Ronald Reagan International Airport. The Washington Metropolitan Transit will be used for transportation to and from the airport and around the city. The group will be housed at the Hyatt Place Washington D.C. / U.S. Capitol, 33 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, D.C. 20002. The group will be eating at either the hotel or nearby restaurants.
Cost of the trip will be approximately $400.00 per person (approximately $225.00 for travel, $115.00 for hotel, $60.00 for amenities). Students will have opportunities to fundraise to offset the cost. There will be no cost to the district.
This experience will allow the students to discover, in depth, all of the mechanisms that contribute to the national government, as well as create memories that will last a lifetime.
This trip will take place over President's Day weekend, including the dates February 16 - February 19, 2017. Students will miss two days of school with a request to deem them as "excused absences."
Approve the request for the Merritt Island High School Student Government Association to visit Washington D.C. on February 16 - 19, 2017.
