Job Description - IA-Dual Sensory

Discussion
Dual sensory impairment is defined by the Florida Department of Education as affecting both vision and hearing, the combination of which causes a serious impairment in the abilities to acquire information, communicate, or function within the environment, or who has a degenerative condition which will lead to such an impairment. The addition of the Instructional Assistant I and II-Dual Sensory is to provide interpreting services for children who are deaf-blind. This is one of the interpreting services documented on the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Policies and Procedures Section B.4 ESE Eligibility for Students who are Dual Sensory Impaired. The job description is similar to the Instructional Assistant-Communications I and II position with the addition of the following qualification: •Successful completion of a course directly related to Deaf-Blindness within the first two years of employment. The courses directly related to Deaf-Blindness are offered for free on-line 3 times a year (spring, summer and fall). •Increase of Physical Demands and Working Conditions (ADA Compliance) from Medium Work to Heavy Work, requiring the worker to have the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently in the performance of her/his daily duties.

Recommendation
Recommend approval of the job descriptions for the IA-Dual Sensory, levels I and II.
