12-18-2014 School Board Workshop with Brevard Legislative Delegation

The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met in a Workshop with the Brevard Legislative Delegation on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Florida Today newspaper on Thursday, December 11, 2014. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

Chairman Kneessy welcomed the Legislative Delegation and thanked them for agreeing to meet with the Board.  She encouraged open dialogue and wanted the meeting to be one of conversation.

Delegation members present included Senator Thad Altman, Representative Tom Goodson, Representative Steve Crisafulli, Representative Rich Workman and Representative Debbie Mayfield. 

Chairman Kneessy said that the purpose was to discuss the Legislative Priorities that have been identified by Brevard Public Schools as ones needing action.

Lunch was provided by the Melbourne High School Culinary Arts Program under the instruction of Chef Michael Ferguson at 11:44 a.m.  The group ate and began discussions again at 12:05 p.m.

Items discussed were assessment and accountability and stable funding sources.  There was conversation about the teacher evaluation system and what is the in the best interest of our students.  

Dr. Binggeli provided the Delegation a proposed funding formula for six counties that a certain amount of their land mass is taken up by military installations that represent 500,000 students. The formula will take into account the number of students times a certain percentage of  land that is federal times the percentage of how far away the district is from the state average.

Minutes: Chairman Kneessy thanked the Delegation once again for meeting with the Board.  Both the Delegation and Board members expressed that they felt the meeting was beneficial and the tone was one of cooperation.
